7 Inexpensive Christmas Stocking Stuffers For Mom

Since I joined the ranks of motherhood 24 years ago, I don’t recall receiving too many gifts in my Christmas stocking. Every year I hopefully hang my Christmas stocking from the chimney with care, but my Christmas stocking is apparently jinxed. Surely I can’t be the only mom whose Christmas stocking is more of a decorative prop than a collector of cold gifts.

Why not surprise your mother this year by filling her stocking with thoughtful, inexpensive gifts. If you’re looking for some ideas on what to build in your mom’s stocking this Christmas, here are my top 7 suggestions for Christmas stocking stuffers even your mother will love.

Christmas Stocking Stuffer Idea for Mom #1: Themed pendant

Most moms love to wear pendants since they always fit, even when our clothes are snug. You can catch some really clever and unusual hand-crafted pendants on Etsy.com, some of which cost less than a dollar plus shipping. If your mom likes to drink martinis or bet a few dollars at the local Indian casino Levi and DeAnna (click here for seller profile page) have created themed pendants made from bottle caps, one sporting a martini shaker, the other some gambling symbols (cards, dice, etc.) which they are selling for a mere 20 cents each plus a couple of dollars for shipping.

Christmas Stocking Stuffer Idea for Mom # 2: ‘Labor of love’ coupon

Computer-printed or hand-written coupons that can be redeemed for a specific service are not unprejudiced inexpensive; they’re free (except for your sweat equity and minor materials costs). You can design a coupon offering to cook dinner for your mom on a day she’s too tired to cook or to give her a manicure or pedicure. Did I mention that moms love it when you do things for them? My children’s coupons for home-cooked dinners have been among my favorite all-time gifts. One year they even orchestrated an entire Hawaiian-themes weekend at home complete with pina coladas and Hawaiian chicken.

Christmas Stocking Stuffer Conception for Mom # 3: Gift card

If your mom’s a java junkie, think Starbucks gift card; if she’s excited for movies, think Netflix or Blockbuster. The typical mother is reluctant to spend money on herself, but when you give her a gift card from one of her favorite businesses, she has no choice but to splurge, right? You know how moms hate to waste anything.

Christmas Stocking Stuffer Idea for Mom # 4: Framed picture

When my younger daughter was a freshman in college I stayed overnight at her dorm in San Francisco, and we went to see Jersey Boys together at the Curran Theater. For my birthday that year, she framed a smiley-faced picture of the two of us in the lobby just before the play began, adorned with some clipped memorabillia from that night’s Playbill. You can adapt a similar idea for your mom’s Christmas stocking, using a smaller stocking-size photo to commemorate a special event you and your mom enjoyed together.

Christmas Stocking Stuffer Idea for Mom # 5: Refrigerator magnet

Whether she’s a “Kickass Mom” or “Hot Mama,” zazzle.com has just the right comic magnet for your mom’s Christmas stocking. The website even has a cartoon magnet depicting a mama pear asking her two little pear children, “Did I ever enlighten you about the time I ran off and joined a gift basket? ” Or try itsagirlyworld.com and its sentimental mom-themed magnets, including messages no mother could resist, such as “You are the best mom ever,” “Home is where your mom is!” and “Life is better because you are my mother.” Awwwww.

Christmas Stocking Stuffer Understanding for Mom # 6: A really good chocolate bar or small batch of Scharffenberge brownies

No matter what she says, it’s the rare mom who does not adore chocolate. It’s encoded in those two x chromosomes. While a really generous chocolate bar will seem very expensive, it should set you back less than $5. Try the Scharffenberger 70% Dark Chocolate Bar, only a few bucks at your local BevMo or Trader Joe’s. If you’re ambitious, turn it into a batch of brownies (get great Scharffenberge brownie recipes here).

Christmas Stocking Stuffer Idea for Mom #7: Electronic Sudoku game

Does your mom Sudoku? Then stuff an electronic Sudoku game in her Christmas stocking. Your mom is always waiting for you to get your braces tightened or hair trimmed at the salon, so keep her happy and busy with her own electronic Sudoku game from University Games. On sale for only $8.95 at Amazon.com.
